New and In-Demand Training for Healthcare Professionals in 2024
As the needs of NHS Trusts evolve, so do Miad Healthcare’s courses. We’re constantly listening to the market so that we can adapt our training to help best support your doctors in new or challenging aspects of their role. At the start of 2024, it seems like a good moment to share details of three new courses that are proving popular for the year ahead:
- Active bystander training
- Neurodiversity awareness training
- Compassionate leadership training
Active bystander training
Both within and outside the healthcare setting, the act of active bystandership is growing in significance. Active bystandership is choosing to intervene in a situation where someone’s behaviour is inappropriate, harmful, or threatening. Within the NHS, if more people feel able to step up as active bystanders, this will ultimately create safer and more supportive environments. Mastering the art of active bystandership requires education and focused training.
Miad’s new programme is suitable for clinicians, Healthcare professionals and non-clinical staff. It has been designed to equip delegates with the skills to safely speak up and empower them to challenge poor behaviours, defining professional boundaries, and bringing about long-term change. Delegates will explore practical tools and strategies to use in the moment, in an environment where personal safety is paramount whilst helping the target of inappropriate behaviour.
From the agenda:
- Understand the bystander effect: Recognise the psychological barriers that prevent intervention.
- Identify what constitutes inappropriate or threatening behaviour in various contexts.
- Become equipped with strategies and skills to intervene safely and effectively.
Neurodiversity awareness training
Increasing numbers of people are being diagnosed with neurodiverse conditions in later life. Behavioural traits that were previously interpreted as a lack of engagement or poor self-regulation are now being recognised as a consequence of genetic and developmental factors. Within healthcare, supervisors can better support their trainees if they can recognise and understand forms of neurodiversity.
Gaining a better understanding of whether traits are behavioural, or as a result of neurodiversity, opens the door to better understanding people and considering how we can accommodate their needs. Miad’s course takes supervisors from a position of little knowledge to a place where they can recognise, understand, and have a broader perspective about neurodiversity.

Compassionate Leadership
The NHS has struggled over many years to sustain inclusive, people-centred cultures and research by The King’s Fund suggests that local action in teams, departments and organisations is where work to create more inclusive cultures is most effective. Developing compassionate leadership at a local level enables supervisors to hold crucial conversations with their trainees.
Miad’s new workshop addresses the barriers of effective communication and teamwork, such as stress, burnout, unconscious bias, and the working environment and provides tools and techniques to help mitigate against these factors. A psychometric will be issued and analysed for each delegate to reflect on their style of working and to be aware of trainees’ working style preferences.

- Explore and understand the role of the clinical and educational supervisors in achieving the best educational outcomes for trainees.
- Explore factors which prevent positive teaching experiences for trainees including unconscious bias, the work environment, leadership and empathy.
- Apply coaching techniques to ensure that trainees feel supported, demonstrating compassionate leadership.
