AI Doesn’t Get Fatigue

Utilising AI solutions to support clinicians could reduce the risk of burnout, increase efficiency and reduce patient waiting lists

With a new report from the Health Services Safety Investigations Body demonstrating the potential danger to patient health when medical staff are overworked, Miad Healthcare is highlighting how strategic use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions could help reduce workload and fatigue, to improve patient outcomes. However, AI must be used to support, not replace human clinicians.

AI is quickly becoming a key player in the healthcare world and is the subject of much discussion across the industry. While the potential of AI to improve workflows and patient care is hard to ignore, the consensus among clinicians, patients and healthcare experts is clear: AI’s current limitations mean it is a powerful tool to support clinical decisions, not make them.

Doctors need to boost their AI literacy – understanding where AI can help, where it can’t and how to use it responsibly. Training and continuous learning are key. AI-focused CPD sessions and NHS training programmes can help clinicians build confidence using these tools, while medical journals and conferences will keep them up to date.

“Industry studies into how AI can support healthcare clinicians are extremely encouraging, but also highlight the technology’s limitations,” commented Dr Hassan Al-Hashimi, MBBS BSc MRCGP, a Miad Healthcare Trainer. “It is important to remember that AI’s accuracy depends on the quality and diversity of the data on which it has been trained. Bias in AI systems is a real risk, especially if the training data doesn’t reflect the full diversity of patients. Social factors like income, living conditions or healthcare access are often left out, which can lead to unfair outcomes. That’s why doctors must be able to assess AI’s recommendations critically and understand its limitations.

“However, it is excellent at spotting patterns in data and handling repetitive tasks such as triaging or helping with admin, meaning there are many ways in which it can be used effectively today to increase efficiency and improve outcomes while reducing workload on clinicians. However, AI is not capable of dealing with rare conditions or nuanced decisions – and it certainly doesn’t have the emotional intelligence or bedside manner that patients need. Until we’re looking at fully functioning humanoid robots that can perform exams and show empathy, doctors remain irreplaceable. The difficult part is understanding how and when to use AI, what it’s good at, where it struggles, and how it can best support clinicians’ work.”

The landscape is evolving as rapidly as the technology itself, and, to help clinicians develop their understanding, Miad is inviting healthcare professionals to join its interactive webinar on 19th June 2025, titled ‘Enhancing Clinical Practice and Education through Digital Transformation’.

The 2.5-hour online session will explore how digital tools – especially AI – are shaping healthcare in the UK, changing clinical decisions and workflows. The session includes practical exercises and will help clinicians learn how to critically evaluate and confidently use AI tools in their work and equip them with digital skills essential for modern clinicians.
